Identity and Reputation in social web

About the collective
What is the biggest problem on the web today? Its that users are having a really tough time keeping track of different usernames and passwords on different websites and computers. Because of the amount of time spend in creating and retrieving all these scattered account information, a lot of technology solutions have been suggested - MicroSoft PassPort, OpenID, MicroSoft CardSpace, Social Graph based applications, SezWho. Still the holy grail of user-centric identity that facilitates better online conversations with a rich reputation interface remains elusive. Let's get together the latest trends and developments in this exciting and potentially game-changing space...

The Semantic Web – Making sense of the beast

About the collective
There has been a significant amount of activity in the semantic web space in the past few months. We have seen several interesting applications going public. (freebase, powerset etc.) This is perhaps a good time to dive into the technology and assess its future.

Collective Forum
discuss

Collective lead nominations
If there more than one nomination to lead a collective, the collective participate can decide the lead by consensus. The collective lead is a volunteer role to contribute.

Proposed topics
Collective leads / participants to List topics discussed and deliberated from the collective forum. This is a wish list of what you would like to hear.

1.Introduction : A quick introduction (15min) to the underlying technologies to kick things off. If you are unfamiliar with this stuff, you should perhaps take a look at some of the links below.

2.Demo’s : We could take a closer look at some of the applications). Taking them apart and critiquing them should be a lot of fun (please volunteer to demo one of these apps – 3 mins for each)

 a.freebase
 b.twine
 c.powerset
 d.trueknowledge
 e.adaptive blue
 f.….?

3.Issues : The one thing that Semantic Web does not suffer from is lack of criticism! We could identify a bunch of issues and shoot darts at each other while we debate them! Here is a short list to seed the debate. (please volunteer to make the basic argument 2 mins for each one)

a.The ‘just put something on a webpage and take it from there’ approach (google’s approach) is far better than all this rdf gobbeldygook.
b.This stuff is just a new name for existing technologies? What’s all the fuss about? Why not just stick with relational databases or xml.
c.Where is all the structured data going to come from? Humans are too lazy to create clean data.
d.How are we going to deal with spam? Humans cannot be trusted to publish clean data (humans in general are a miserable lot!)
 e.…?

4.Prospects : After having questioned its value, we could then have a shot at seeing if could indeed create anything of value using these technologies. You might just discover the idea for your next startup (and a make a billion… or two).

5.Handson : The true believers (and the just converted) can dive into a handson session involving some of the rdf tools. We will mostly likely use php and the RAP rdf library. Here are the things we could look at.

 a.setup a rdf database.
 b.add and retrieve data
c.some basic inferencing (the AI geeks will feel at home here)

Some ground rules that we should perhaps adopt (subject to consensus) 1.We should try to wrap this all up within one 3 hour slot. 2.No presentations. We could make liberal use of flipcharts and our tongues. 3.No auditoriums or classrooms or swivel chairs. An openspace should be perfect. 4.Debate != Bitter Argument. (paper darts should be fine though – just don’t shoot at the humans)

Links

  1. Paul Ford’s original essay on the semantic web. link(for the three of you who have not read it yet)
  2. Introduction to the semantic web.link

Sessions
There could be two topics that can be handled in the 'session' format ie Intro (15mins) and the hands-on. The demo's should ideally be restricted to about 3mins each.

  1. Harish onebigweb - any topic that's an orphan!

Discussions
We could discuss the issues listed above as well as the prospects. Would you like to champion any them? Put your name down along with the issue.

Wireless Mesh Bangalore ?!

About the collective
Wireless networks are making a presence around the world. One interesting approach is to build a community network, bottom-up, by the use of shared network infrastructure and link-state routing algorithms. Free Software developments, like OpenWrt (http://openwrt.org) or Freifunk (http://wiki.freifunk.net/Kategorie:English), had shown the possibility to convert usual consumer WLAN-routers into cheap ready-to-use Wireless Mesh nodes.

This development created the base for a lot of community networks, which now existing and growing around the Globe. So maybe it's time to create a Wireless Community Group in Bangalore to explore possibilities to build a local community-driven communication infrastructure.

Web Development - Web 2.0 and the lot

About the collective
When Web 2.0 came into "being" many people picked it up, many dismissed it saying it was more of a marketing gimmick. It's been a while now and the term "Web 2.0" has been adopted to characterise a movement of sorts in the web development/design community. Ofcourse, it goes far ahead of big fonts, bright colours, shiny logos and all things apple. It is more increasingly being used to define aspects of web design and development which have been pushed by the community (developers as well as users). This collective provides insight into

  • HTML 5
  • CSS 3
  • AJAX
  • Microformats

Ruby

About the collective
This collective is for people interested in the Ruby programming language in particular and dynamic languages in general. Also covered is the immensely popular Rails framework. And yes, if you've heard that Ruby as a language beats Java and C# hands down, you heard right :-).

Want to try stuff out? We heartily recommend it. You can download Ruby from Ruby Downloads. We recommend the one-click installer for Windows. *nix users please also install Ruby Gems, Ruby's package manager. Then (optionally) get Rails.

The Hacker Collective

About the collective
This Collective is for hackers to talk about software they created or are working on. Thus instead of speaking about how cool Ruby or Ruby on Rails is, talk about "here is a cool tool I wrote in ruby or rails". "Here is some OpenGL code I was working on" vs "the coolness of OpenGL". If you write code, in any language or using any technology, and want to talk about what you made and what you learned, this is the collective for you.

About the collective
If you are a serious hacker and are interested in elegant, beautiful, self documenting code and design, then this collective is the place you might want to hang-out.

As of now we plan to have hands-on-sessions with lots of discussions. The Hands-on-sessions are composed of demos mixed with participants trying it on their laptops. We'll start light and fuzzy, but you'll get your hands dirty. We believe in less talking more hacking.

Note: Demos are in Java, but the concepts and discussion are platform/language agnostic.

Startup Talent Management

About the collective
This Collective is focussed on talent retention and management issues in startups and/or small companies without strong financial backing or great branding. These small companies need to operate with great constraints: Unproven ideas, Cannot afford to pay high salaries, Not big brands, people leave, etc.

The intention is to discuss strategies, tips, techniques we employ to keep people, deliver value to the employees so that they stay. Serious thinkers, people afflicted with this problem, ex/current startup employees, HR gurus .... should take a stab at this!

Intrapreneurship

About the collective
India is country of creative people and next step for us is to convert these ideas into successful ventures. While enterpreneurship might be great for some people, some of us creative people wish to do this in an organization context. This is what is termed as Intrapreurship. Some of us are successful in taking ideas to success in the context of company. But the overall conversion ratio of ideas to successful products/ventures is very less. Some of the organizations have started thinking about this and this collective is about sharing and discussing learnings from a practitoner's point of view.

Online conversations & word-of-mouth advertising

About the collective
Disclaimer: This is going to sound very corporate-ish. Sorry about that!)

I am interested in creating, sustaining and encouraging conversations online, and because it's my work, in using that to create positive experiences about brands that people use daily. More than just conversations, I am interested in leveraging technology to do all that, and maybe more. Got an opinion? Disagree with me? Think I am crazy? Let's work it out. In any case, let's talk.

Designing Barcamp Bangalore

About the collective
Barcamp Bangalore is now in its 5th edition. It was easier to design the format earlier when it was small and we could gather feedback and design the format for the next BCB. With the current size and scope, its increasingly difficult to design a format that's good for most of us. This collective will bring together all such people who want to have a say in the design of BCB6. It'll be intense!

NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) Collective

Explanation Every year, thousands, nay, millions of novelling enthusiasts dream of one impossible dream - to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. Starting on the 1st of November and ending on the 30th, the NaNoWriMo is a bunch of writers who are currently struggling to write 1667 words a day to meet the coveted word count.

This is the first year that India has a local chapter and we have a round dozen who has registered for the NaNoWriMo this year (the registrations are still open and will remain so till almost the very end of the month). We are using the BarCamp to come together for a Write-a-thon. Hence, unlike most collectives, we are not proposing talks, but instead, coming together to write for the two days of BarCamp, probably taking breaks and talking about what goes into the writing of a novel and why we are doing it.

Anybody who wants to chip in, with curiosity, questions or their dream about writing the one novel they always wanted to write, is welcome to join us. If you are registering for this collective, please keep in mind that constant power connections might not be possible and hence, while your laptop might be close to your heart, you might try some technology-adultery and also use pen(cils) and paper to do the writing.

Because we do not have many talks, we do not want to hog the limited resources available for other collectives and would most probably be taking up a corner with some mats and cushions, or laze in the CCD (The coffee! The coffee!) pretending we are in a European Summer holiday.

Life

About the collective
Ever wondered what life is all about. Why the hell should we all be here and be doing all this technology and all this stuff, is it only to sustain ourselves, and be seen as successful in society and all?

Is it just randomly that we have all come here, or are there some missing links.

Is there somethings that some people know, but are not known to everyone of us.

What was Buddha, was he really a God, so to speak. Did Buddha really attain nirvana. And if yes? And also if the theory of Buddhism was to give up, why was he so associated with mankind, as to want good for them, and preach them things? Is there not a huge contradiction in something as simple as Buddha.

What was I born for, is the one of the most common an-answered questions around. Can we find some answers, or is there any need for such an answer [1]

IT for schools

About the collective
Using IT in schools is nothing new. School Information management system are in use, computer labs are partially available. Most applied solutions don't focus on the the special school environment, which might create dependencies from Software Developers as well as from the local IT department.

The Collective creates a place to discuss special requirements for school IT solutions on one side and successful attempts to provide solutions for schools. Everybody who has an interest in developing or using IT in schools is invited to join the collective.

Some points to introduce you and discuss might be:

  • school management, how to transfer non-IT into IT-based management
  • creating secure applications to minimize dependency on IT people
  • choosing the right development platforms to create sustainable solutions
  • etc.
