[edit] World'Âs First ever ÂCollectives BarCamp in Bangalore
Bangalore, July 24, 2007: Bangalore soon will have another first to its credit. More than 700 people will converge on to IIM Bangalore Campus on 28th and 29th of July 2007 to attend the first âÃÂÃÂCollectivesâÃÂàBarCamp in the world. All these 700 have signed up without any publicity and advertisement even though only 3 weeks have passed since the announcement of the event. And the best part is that all 700 are looking to be speakers and not audience!
Still none of this is new for BarCamp Bangalore which has a unique track record across the world. BarCamps Bangalore 1, 2 and 3 had all exceeded planned capacity. All people have always turned up within weeks on the basis of word of mouth and spent their precious weekend at the BarCamp. And the number of people looking to be speakers than being audiences has increased dramatically as the track record below shows.
| BarCamp Bangalore 1 | 22nd April 2006 | 150 participants |
| BarCamp Bangalore 2 | 2nd & 3rd December 2006 | 250 participants |
| BarCamp Bangalore 3 | 31st March & 1st April 2007 | 400 participants |
While the numbers will swell again (700+ sign-ups already), BarCamp Bangalore is breaking new ground again by forming Collectives. A Collective is a thread (akin to a track in a conference) at BarCamp that involves a group of individuals interested in a certain topic, technology, concept or focus area. Collectives allow the BarCamp content or themes to be determined by the participants than the organizers. Collectives are proposed by the community in advance of the event and allow potential participants to rally behind and contribute to the content. Thus, the 700+ participants have been working for 3 weeks to decide what they will speak about. That is the power of collective!
Collectives include the popular Internet Collectives and Mobile Collectives. The new ones include Python, blogging, Photography, Society, start-ups amongst many others. They would lead to connections/interaction even beyond the BarCamp thus fostering a innovation/interaction environment
BarCamps started out of the Silicon Valley like many other innovative ideas. But it is in Bangalore that they have found their strongest home. BarCamp Bangalore has been an ad-hoc gathering born out of the desire for people to meet up, share and exchange ideas and possibilities in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants.
The vision of BarCamp Bangalore is bring together enthusiasts, thinkers, designers and visionaries and thereby create an ecosystem for the ideation, cross pollination and germination of ideas that could lead to realization. BarCamp Bangalore is one of the most popular BarCamps in the world and attracts a pan-Indian following of techies, non-techies and entrepreneurs alike, with increasing global interest. Many entrepreneurs use BarCamp as a platform for validating and/or showcasing their ideas and products.
The Collectives Barcamp is supported by the Platinum Sponsor Directi; a 300+ million dollars group of Business Units that develops innovative mass-market Web Products serving millions of Customers worldwide.
About BarCamps
BarCamps turn around the notion of a formal conference by eliminating the distinction between speakers and delegates. Everyone is regarded equally as a participant, and is welcome to propose a discussion, speak up or add to on a topic they are familiar with. BarCamps are organized and evangelized largely through the web by a community driven, collective organizational process using a wiki as a tool. A BarCamp consists of sessions proposed and scheduled each day by attendees, mostly on-site and "on the fly", using white boards or paper taped to the wall. While BarCamps are loosely structured, there are rules. All attendees are encouraged to present, facilitate or contribute to a session. Everyone is also asked to share information and experiences of the event, both live and after the event, via blogging, photo sharing, social bookmarking, wiki-ing, and IRC. Anyone can initiate a BarCamp, using the BarCamp wiki. Attendance is monetarily free and generally restricted only by space constraints. Venues typically provide free network access, usually WiFi, which is crucial.
