Brand Old Idea - Collectives
In a hurry, just go and register a collective
A Collective is like a package deal – you no longer come alone, you come in a bundle. Collectives are groups of people (generally people) who aggregate around common topics/concerns/ideologies/peeves. They are like niche rooms devised to encourage individuals who, otherwise, spend a lot of energy in inventing the same wheel in different locations, oblivious to the efforts of the others. We introduce Collectives as a way of forming your initial networks before you reach the physical venue. Collectives are specifically, NOT your social networking system replacements – aim for quality of discussion and emergent results rather than numbers.
There are a few ideas already in place:
- The Bangalore Python (er.. not snakes) Group is planning a Bang Pypers meet at the Barcamp itself.
- The Bangalore Bloggers (Bloggers of the world unite!) are meeting up to discuss on how to best live blog the event itself.
- One of the organizers is un-planning (he insisted we use the word) a Bangalore Superheroes in Disguise gang to think of strategies to save the world from conferences.
Last we heard, the Bangalore Insomniac Group is planning to meet up for a discussion on productive somnambulism. The possibilities are endless and if you can live up to your own aspirations, you are free to come and make your own collective – to go forth and multiply. The basic idea is that if you have a concept and you want to unravel it, this is the time and the place for all the good men (and women) to come to the aid of the party. The tyranny of slots and themes imposed by the organizers is gone with the wind. Instead you have an open hall where you connect with people and create pandemonium and mayhem in the true tradition of an open minded discussion.
Why are we meddling with a time tested model? Naturally, because we are smarter. Jokes apart, and tabularly (Yes, we know that is not a word) we have learned from the last three Barcamps. We want to get away from the musical chairs of assigned sessions and scheming that the large crowds entail. With this particular format, we are hoping to go back to the original principles of a bar camp - Shorter sessions, More time to network and chat, informal collectives and sharing of ideas, an unregulated by more structured platform of information pooling and adequate time and space for groups to bang their heads together around the questions at hand.
