Welcome to Barcamp Bangalore 3
What is a Barcamp?
Barcamp is an ad-hoc gathering born out of the desire for people to meet up, share, exchange ideas and possibilities in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. BarCamp is an international network of events that have been held in over 31 cities worldwide. The name is a playful allusion to its origins, with reference to the hacker slang term, foobar: BarCamp arose as a spin-off and response to Foo Camp, an annual invitation-only event hosted by open source publishing luminary, Tim O'Reilly. The first BarCamp was held in Palo Alto, California, in August 2005. Since then, BarCamps have been held across North America, South America, Europe and Asia -- from Boston to Bangalore.
Barcamps turn around the notion of a formal conference by eliminating the distinction between speakers and delegates. Everyone is a participant, and is equally welcome to propose a discussion, speak up or add to on a topic they are familiar with. Barcamps are organized and evangelized largely through the web by a community driven, collective organizational process using a wiki as a tool. A Barcamp consists of sessions proposed and scheduled each day by attendees, mostly on-site and "on the fly", typically using white boards or paper taped to the wall. While Barcamps are loosely structured, there are rules. All attendees are encouraged to present, facilitate or contribute to a session. Everyone is also asked to share information and experiences of the event, both live and after the event, via blogging, photo sharing, social bookmarking, wiki-ing, and IRC. Anyone can initiate a BarCamp, using the BarCamp wiki. Attendance is monetarily free and generally restricted only by space constraints. Venues typically provide free network access, usually WiFi, which is crucial.
Barcamp Bangalore 3 - Internet, Mobile, Society
Barcamp Bangalore is in its third edition with the current theme being “Internet, Mobile & Society” where in addition to regular tech speak and demos, discussions about how technology impacts our society and lives will be sparked. The event will be held at the sprawling campus of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore on March 31st and April 1st, 2007. The previous editions of Barcamp Bangalore (BCB) were held in April and Dec 2006.
The vision of Barcamp Bangalore is to bring together technology enthusiasts, thinkers, designers and visionaries together and thereby create an ecosystem for the ideation, cross pollination and germination of ideas that could lead to realization. Barcamp Bangalore is one of the most popular Barcamps in India and attracts a pan-indian following of techies and entrepreneurs alike and an increasing global interest. Many entrepreneurs use Barcamp as a platform for validating and/or showcasing their ideas and products. Business World carried an article that detailed this new trend.
Barcamp Bangalore 3 is going to be the same as Barcamp 1 & 2, a focal point for great ideas. At this event, we also intend to specifically share stories of technology implementations that affected society around us, and social norms that affected the course of technology. We hope to have stories like Indian copyright law and innovation in music and celluloid movies, e-governance electronic record keeping and what it means for those without access; and the resultant impact of these in shaping of society and culture. We’d love to hear more, perhaps on the application of technology to understand the human condition, or perhaps on the growing spread of personal communication technologies and the unexpected but undeniable shift in the landscape of mass media and governance.
While we practice an open model for the content of the event, it does take a lot of work to get one organised. More details here.

What's with the name Barcamp?
“Foobar” is a common placeholder name used in computer programming or computer related documentation. When US-based tech publisher O’Reilly invited some friends to a “Foo Camp”, for “Friends of O’Reilly”, it was but natural that others responded with their own version, dubbed the “Bar Camp”, the twist being that anyone who wanted to come could feel invited. Barcamps have since grown into a worldwide movement of such ad hoc, participant driven events. Anyone can organise a Barcamp. In Bangalore, the first and second events were organised by completely different teams, while the third is the result of their combined efforts.
